Our History
The Bartlett family has made a living farming the Home Place east of Como, Mississippi for over 150 years. The 5th generation transitioned the farm from input intensive row crops into a regenerative grazing operation, using animal impact to rebuild soils and produce award winning grass fed beef and pastured pork.
In 2014, when 5th generation farmer Marshall Bartlett moved home and founded Home Place Pastures, he recognized that to connect end consumers with regenerative ag practices, he had to have access to the facility that turned the livestock into sellable products. He was determined to design and build his own plant on the farm. For the first couple years, HPP used a USDA slaughter facility outside of Memphis, and rented space in a butcher shop in Memphis to butcher, seal, and label HPP products for distribution regional chefs (often in a home-made cooler in the bed of a pickup in those days).
In 2016, HPP began processing in its own on-farm facility, and in 2018 the company began slaughter on site under inspection. In 2023 HPP completed an expansion project which added crucial production and cold storage space. HPP is one of the only farms in the country that operates its own USDA slaughter and processing facility on site. This facility has become a huge part of our business, and we are proud to offer processing services to other local farmers as well.
We have farmed in this community for 150 years, and it is our mission to continue supporting our community in our transition to regenerative agriculture. We do this by creating viable jobs on our farm, in our meat plant, and at our farm store. We have also created a special place for folks to gather, eat, and enjoy our farm through the Farm Store and eatery. We support the local food bank and other community driven nonprofits, and work to highlight the music and culinary traditions and contemporary talent in our home town!
